Ramayana The Epic Movie Review, Rating

The epic is getting a superhero turn here, so Bhagwan Ram as a six- pack hunk was only expected. What makes you do a double take is watching how they have transformed even Lord Ganesh into a chiselled dude sporting a rippling muscular frame. To enter the mindscape of Gen Now, even the rolypoly Elephant God has had to hit the gym, it seems.

If Ramayana: The Epic wanted to take Indian animation to its next level, the storyboard blueprint is swanky to say the least. Too bad, the SFX and visual treatment still look two- dimensional.

And for all the rippling torsos the heroes flaunt, the animation team seems to have neglected facial details. The Gods of Ramayana The Epic look like wooden Bollywood studs.

Blame it on the lack of proper budget to rival Hollywood toon productions, but director Chetan Desai must have realised an awful truth.

When it comes to shelling out the bucks for toon flicks, Bollywood moneybags are still tightfisted.

In a bid to make up for that technical drawback, the creative team of the film floods every frame with a riot of colours. The epic is being redefined for the young and young adult viewers here.

Everything — from treatment to thematic content — has been tweaked keeping that in mind.

Manoj Bajpai, Juhi Chawla, Mukesh Rishi and Ashutosh Rana do a fair job as the voices of Ram, Sita, Hanuman and Raavan. And given the fact that the story is a familiar one, the thrust seems more on highlighting the battle scenes. Some heavy dialogue baazi takes care of the rest.

Rating - 2.5 / 5
