Mumbai Marathon 2011 concluded with glamsteam & lung power



The prestigious Mumbai Marathon saw more than 35,000 people turn up for the annual jamboree with celebs, industrialists and the glam set adding punch to the event.

Celebrities ran shoulder to shoulder with professional runners from across the world and the general public. Bollywood stars Gul Panag, Neha Dhupia, and Rahul Bose, a regular every year, ran for their respective charities.

Other celebs such as Shilpa Shetty, Vivek Oberoi, Vidya Balan and Mahindra boss Anand Mahindra were seen cheering them from the sidelines. Socialite Tina Ambani’s NGO Harmony lent vocal support to senior citizens while husband Anil ran the 21 km half marathon. While 2,800 participated in the 42 km run, 11,000 people ran the half marathon and 22,000 people ran the dream run of six kms.

Actress Deepika Padukone was there to cheer the runners especially her beau Siddhartha Mallya, the son of liquor baron Vijay Mallya, ran the 42 km stretch. Congress MP Priya Dutt was also seen cheering participants.

In the end, Ethiopians Girima Assefa and Koren Yal walked away with the honours in the male and female categories respectively. The marathon however was mired in controversies even before it began. The Brihan mumbai Municipal Corporation decided to charge organisers, Procam International a fee of Rs 1.8 crore for the event. Procam claimed that since it was a charitable event it needs to be excused.
