Bachchan Family Ecstatic as Amitabh Bachchan received National Award for 'PAA'

The First family of Bollywood — the Bachchans — stole the show at the 57th National Film Awards presentation ceremony here on Friday. They were present in full strength to cheer Amitabh Bachchan, who received his third best actor award from President Pratibha Patil.

The Bachchan family, comprising wife Jaya Bachchan, son Abhishek, daughter- in- law Aishwarya Rai, daughter Shweta and son- inlaw Nikhil Nanda raised the glam quotient of the otherwise drab function.

The audience showed their love for the Bachchans by giving a standing ovation to the veteran superstar. He won the award for his role in Paa — that of a 13- yearold boy suffering from progeria.

The controversy- free awards relegated Big B’s long running feud with the country’s first family of politics — the Gandhis — into the background, as information and broadcasting minister and hostess Ambika Soni graciously saw the family off. While Amitabh and Abhishek were dressed in black suits, Aishwarya looked gorgeous in a purple and green south Indian silk sari. Jaya, also dressed in black, got teary- eyed as Amitabh went to receive the award on stage. Abhishek, the producer of Paa, also received the award for the best Hindi feature film.

The President also gave away the Dada Saheb Phalke award to veteran producer and director D. Rama Naidu for his contribution to the Indian cinema. Apart from Bachchan, the most heartwarming applause was reserved for six- year- old Aasna Aslam, a visually challenged girl who received a special jury award for her sensitive performance in Malayalam film Kelkkunnundo.

Anjuli Shukla became the proud recipient of the best cinematography award — the first ever woman to win in this category. Malayalam movie Kutty Srank walked away with five awards — best feature film, best cinematography, best screenplay, best costume and a special jury mention.

Shaji N. Karun, who directed Kutty Srank, received the Swarna Kamal and Rs. 2.5 lakh. Aamir Khan- starrer 3 Idiots bagged the award for the best popular movie. The producer and director of 3 Idiots — Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Raj Kumar Hirani, respectively — received Swarna Kamal and Rs. 2 lakh each, amid cries of All iz well . Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, who directed Delhi- 6, received the Nargis Dutt award for best feature film on national integration.

Shyam Benegal’s Well Done Abba was chosen as the best movie on social issues. Paa also bagged two other awards — Arundhati Nag as the best supporting actress and Christein Tinsley and Dominie Till as best make- up artistes.

The Song Behti hawa sa tha woh from 3 Idiots won the best lyricist award for Swanand Kirkere. Playback singer Shaan sang this song during the ceremony, while Nilanjana Sarkar, who won the best playback female singer award, sang her sensuous Bangla number from the film Houseful . The best children’s film award was shared by Putaani Party in Kannada and Keshu in Malayalam.

With Indian cinema completing 100 years in 2013, Soni declared she would set up a committee to make the event memorable. Aishwarya Rai- Bachchan gives a warm hug to father- in- law Amitabh before he went on stage to receive his best actor award.
