Tamil Nadu police is in no hurry to proceed against disgraced former IPL czar Lalit Modi in the case pertaining to misappropriation of Rs 470 crore.
As sifting through the maze of documents submitted by the BCCI requires time, it would take at least a week to issue summons.
“ Once we decide to issue summons, we can take a logical step,” says City Police Commissioner T Rajendran.
Admittedly, the task is a challenging one. “ We are pondering over the records. The BCCI has given a lot of them, some of which are very complicated. So we are going to seek the help of experts. After having gone through the records we can come to a conclusion as to who are the people we can issue summons,” he explained.
On Thursday, the police registered a case against Modi and six others under different sections of the Indian penal code, including those on cheating and fudging of IPL accounts.
This followed a complaint by BCCI secretary N Srinivasan the previous day. The former IPL boss has been charged with criminal misappropriation of funds in the allotment of media rights, free commercial air time and security arrangements.
On whether the city police could handle a case of this magnitude, he admitted that it was a challenge. “ We get a lot of cases relating to stocks and shares. However, this is a different thing altogether.
These are big players, some of them (agencies) are in foreign countries.” When his attention was drawn to the fact that some of the accused are staying abroad, he said the Enforcement Directorate had taken steps. “ We will deal with it,” he added.
