Tata Nano wins Michelle & Barack Obama’s admiration

Tata Nano, the world’s lowest- cost car, stole the attention of the US First Lady Michelle Obama, who expressed her keen desire to see and drive the little wonder, to none other than Ratan Tata himself.

“ This is the man who created the world’s cheapest $ 2,500 wonder car,” said President Barack Obama, introducing Ratan Tata to First Lady Michelle Obama, when the couple met Tata at the reception of the Taj Hotel in Mumbai. Ratan Tata leads the $ 72- billion conglomerate Tata Group that includes Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, or the Taj Hotel as it is popularly known, where the US President and his wife Michelle Obama stayed while at Mumbai.

According to an eye witness account, the mere mention of Nano was enough to arouse the interest of Michelle Obama, who seemed quite impressed by the introduction, in the tiny car.

Promptly Michelle Obama expressed her desire to see the car and drive it, to Ratan Tata himself.

Quite humbled by the request, Ratan Tata instructed his staff to arrange a well- decorated, chauffer- driven Tata Nano in the hotel for a preview in the morning, by the President and his wife.

According to the hotel staff, the couple stepped out in the morning to take a good look at the car. While Obama preferred looking at the car from the outside, the US First Lady was quite enthusiastic to enter the car and take a look from the inside.

According to a Taj Hotel staff, Michelle Obama is reported to have said, “ It is amazing” when she stepped out of it after checking it out for about five minutes.

“Nano is exclusive. We showcased our car to the US President and the First Lady. It was a moment of honour as the First Lady expressed her desire to see the car,” said a Tata Motors spokesperson.
