Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey Review, Rating : Patriotic High

Freaky, how Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey lives upto the title of Do Or Die , Manini Chatterjee’s book on which it is based. For Abhishek Bachchan, this is a role that can bring him back in the reckoning.

For Ashutosh Gowariker, it is a big push at proving he’s our best man in business when it comes to period drama. Deepika Padukone’s career may be rocking right now, but this is really the first chance she gets at showing us she can act too.

They have all done a fine job in meeting the challenge at hand, as has every technician and prop actor associated with this film.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is a special film by Bollywood standards. It harks back to the days when films were sold on the purity of content and not on gimmicks they want you to buy.

For those who came in late, Gowariker’s new film documents a slice of history. The focus is on the Chittagong Uprising of 1930 when a group of young men launched a spate of attacks on the British police armouries in the area. They were led by the revolutionary Surya Sen. The fateful night when the attacks occurred is widely considered as one of the pivotal points where the Indian war of Independence kicked off.

Gowariker unfolds the story with trademark pace, yet filling in enough tension and drama to keep the audience captivated all through. Javed Akhtar’s script does depart from Chatterjee’s book at places but you could argue a few changes were essential to make the story compatible for visual entertainment.

The film has been spectacularly shot ( Kiran Deohans) and adequately cut ( Dilip Deo). Credit goes to the crew for getting the look and feel right. You don’t spot any obvious glitches in production design. This is good historical stuff as it should be made within the mainstream format, but it could have been better.

If Abhishek Bachchan’s Surya Sen impresses you with the understated gravitas the actor lends to the role, Deepika as Kalpana Dutta, Sen’s love who forsakes her rich family to learn the art of making bombs, lends poise in a solid role.

Sikander Kher and newcomer Vishakha Singh are other notable performers.

Rating - 3/5
