Live action mixed with animation may have been dime- adozen stuff in Hollywood ever since Who Framed Roger Rabbit wowed way back in 1988, but Hindi cinema has never really tried dabbling with the genre. This experiment is special in that sense.
Ajay plays Aditya, a star of Bollywood action movies whose kids don’t quite look upto him as a hero. Battling to prove himself in the eyes of his children, Aditya is one day magically transported into the land of toons where the adventure begins.
Toonpur, Aditya soon learns, is divided between good and evil just like our world. The good guys are called Devtoons and the evil ones are the Toonasurs. Of course, the Devtoons and the Toonasurs are at war.
And the Devtoons, it turns out, are responsible for Aditya’s arrival in Toonpur. Since he is an action star in real life, the good toons mistake him for a superhero and believe that he could help them win the battle against the evil Toonasurs.
Toonpur ka Superhero tries to unfold like an action- packed adventure game for kids. In that sense, it works to a large extent.
The problem with the film are the toons. Cute as they are, Indian animation is still to reach the desired level of perfection for the little ones to be impressed. Kids today are fed on top- ofthe- line Hollywood toon fare, after all.
Still, this could be a nice Christmas weekend outing for the whole family.
