They say your guest list and, more importantly, who on the list turns up at your do, is a sign of your clout in showbiz. Everyone who is anyone in Mumbai turned up in their designer best on Saturday evening as Aamir Khan hosted a reception to mark the wedding of his nephew Imran Khan with Avantika.
The January 10 wedding was a private affair, but the reception saw the glitterati by the hordes, alighting from their swanky cars and decked in chic best. From Bollywood A- listers to cricketing superstars, from political top dogs to bureaucrats, from industrialists to Page 3 divas — they were all there.
The venue, the Taj Land’s End hotel at Bandstand, looked more like the location of a mega Bollywood awards night. But you realised it wasn’t an awards do when you spotted superstar Aamir Khan with wife Kiran Rao at the gate, personally receiving each and every guest.
While Imran looked resplendent in formals, Avantika dazzled in a lehenga . As the evening wore, the guest list continued to swell. The frenetic crowd that had gathered outside the hotel went into raptures as Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh walked in.
Top tycoons spotted at the do included Mukesh Ambani, Anand Mahindra, and Kumar Mangalam Birla. The Thackerays added a dash of drama to the evening. Just as Shiv Sena leader Uddhav walked into the hotel, his cousin and political rival Raj made a rather pronounced exit.
Of course, the waiting crowd reserved the biggest cheers for the A- listers. A mini riot ensued when Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Preity Zinta and Karan Johar walked in. Thespians such as Shammi Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar ( who came with wife Saira Banu), Dharmendra and Jeetendra also came to offer their blessings to the happy couple.
Shah Rukh Khan turned the most heads as he and wife Gauri entered the venue. But those who were expecting SRK and Salman to kiss and make up as they came under the same roof were left disappointed as SRK reached the venue at around 2:30 am where as Salman made an quite exit at around mid night and that too from the back door.
Others who attended the reception included Yash and Pamela Chopra, Juhi Chawla, Sarika and Rajkumar Hirani.
