Valentines Day Gift Ideas : Boyfriend or Girlfriend should think out of the box

We don't want to sound like the Bajrang Dal or the Sriram Sene, but sometimes the mush around Valentine’s Day can really get on your nerves. So get creative and think beyond heart- shaped balloons, chocolates, teddy bears and candlelight dinners? Here’s an idiot’s guide that can be of help.

Literally Stuffed

Stuffed toys have made V- Day... well stuffy. Looking at the same old teddy bears, cupids and heart- shaped pillows screaming out, ‘ I love you’ from gift shop windows can leave you gasping for fresh air. “ The worst gifts are the ones picked off the rack and completely unrelated to what the other person wants,” says Nidhi Bhasin, 25, a marketing manager. But with a little effort you can make an inexpensive gift invaluable.

What you can do: Get creative and wow your partner. “ Make a jigsaw puzzle out of a nice photo of yourself and your partner, paste it on a cardboard and cut it into pieces to make a jigsaw puzzle,” says Bhasin. The internet is teeming with innovative puzzles. A brand new one making waves is Buckyballs. It is a collection of 216 magnetic balls that can be moulded into different shapes and patterns. Available for $ 29.95 ( Rs. 1,356), you can order it on www. getbuckyballs. com. Mini prototypes of cars, such as Porsche or Ferrari is a good idea too. “ If your guy is a car buff, this makes for an ideal gift,” says Neha Mehta, 27, a communication professional. Mehta has ordered for a mini remote- controlled Ferrari for her husband for Rs. 999 from www. homeshop18. com.

Yawning In Candle Light

Accept it, the oh- so- 50s candlelight dinners have really lost their charm. They have been done to death and it’s time we sent the idea to its rightful place – its grave.

What you can do: Quite a few couples are chucking candlelight dinners for adventurous getaways. IT professional Vishal Arora, 32, advocates a joint bungee jump: “ There’s nothing more exciting than tightly hugging your partner and jumping into nothingness,” he says.

Remember Hrithik and Ash in Dhoom 2? Sexy. “ You could also go for other adventure sports like rafting,” he adds. Quiet getaways around Delhi are a big hit. Fox flying at Neemrana Fort, for instance, is the best option for Delhi couples who are strapped for time. It is a zip tour in which you fly down a series of steel zip lines, attached by a harness and pulley.

No Red Roses Please

Red is for love, yellow for friendship, and white for peace… sounds like the rhyme you about the colours of the traffic signal. Several people will parrot these lines during ‘ love week’. And flower shops will, of course, make a fortune.

What you can do: You have all the right to not be fleeced by a flower- seller – and that too for red roses! If you must go green, why don’t you make a small terrarium? Terrariums are small plants grown in glass or plastic bottle. Just get an old fancy bottle of rum fill it with pebbles, charcoal and soil and sow seeds of some small plants. Chocolate’S Aftertaste

If you believe in research and Pamela Anderson, you wouldn’t want to present chocolates to your Valentine. Research found that a bite of chocolate is four times more exciting than kissing. And Pam agrees, saying chocolate is better than sex.

A dig into a bar of chocolate releases certain happy hormones in your brain — the same ones that are released when you are in love. It lifts up your mood and takes you to the who- needs- a- partner- when- you- canhave- chocolate mode. Jokes. com lists out the reasons why chocolate is better than sex: “ Chocolate satisfies even when it’s soft.

And it doesn't make you pregnant.” Besides, not everyone is crazy about chocolates.

What you can do: Chocolates and Valentine’s Day have always been synonymous. It is time to break the jinx. Stay away from them if you don’t want to come across as unimaginative. Of course, there is plenty of naughty stuff you can do with chocolate, you just need to use your brain. Says Aditya Mehra, 27, a photographer. “ If you really want to gift your Valentine something to eat, just find out what she really likes and then surprise her. I had gifted one of my girlfriends a box of chocolates. The box sat pretty in her fridge for six months – she was on a diet. After we broke up, she ate the chocolates to cope with break- up blues.”

I Am Alone Syndrome

The biggest cliché around V- Day is the ‘ I'am- so- alone’ syndrome. Get over it guys. VDay is not all about man- woman love! Stop moaning about your relationship status.

What you can do: There are some things that are more satisfying than spending a day with your beloved.

Shilpa Shetty, for instance, will be spending her Valentine’s Day with underprivileged children. She is married and doesn’t suffer from the above- mentioned syndrome, yet all singletons can seek inspiration from her.

Vedika Ram appreciates the idea and has actually something planned out for the 13th of February. “ I will be interacting with child cancer patients at a children’s party thrown by an NGO called Aadhar,” says Ram. “ I would feel happy if I could ease their pain for a few moments,” she adds.

Thank God people have stopped modelling themselves after Madhuri Dikshit, who bought V- day goodies for herself on Valentine’s Day just because she was single and alone in the movie Dil To Pagal Hai .
